But our God, our great Father in heaven, sent us the true manna, His Son Jesus Christ, as the bread of life for us. The son sought for material peace and happiness and was left with only misery. What was wasted becomes sustainable in Him. Yet upon returning home with nothing but the tattered clothes he was wearing, his father lovingly said, “Bring me the best robe and put it on him.” Seeing his bare feet, he said, “Put shoes on him.” Having lost all his wealth, and even pawning his jewelry, his father says, “Put a ring on his hand.” The son was hungry and thirsty the father says to “Prepare a great feast!”Īs the bread of life, Jesus is the redeemer of lost lives. It all perished as he spent his entire inheritance trying to be satisfied in the material things of the world. He sought out fine clothes, jewelry, and everything to eat and drink. But his interpretation of the good life was seeking materialism. In the parable of the prodigal son, we find a young man leaving home, seeking life for himself. Jesus says, “I am the bread of life.” Jesus is telling the world that He is the only true bread, and He invites all to “come and believe” so that they will never hunger or thirst (spiritually) in this world again. In Him you will find more than food and water, more than shelter from the storm you will find sustenance for all of life’s situations. Jesus is telling us, rather, to labor after spiritual things, to labor after Him as the way, the truth, the life. The Samaritan woman at the well only wanted the living water so she would not have to labor in her shame to draw water again. But like manna, they satisfy only for a moment and then they spoil and perish. We make the mistake of thinking they can be found in money, success, power, relationships and we labor after these things. Jesus makes a distinct reference to the manna in the wilderness (Exodus 16) and how the children of Israel complained and desired more.Īs people, we are inclined to labor after the material things we feel will provide us with peace and happiness. Then He exhorts the crowd to not labor for the food that perishes but for the food which endures unto everlasting life. You were fed, yet you missed the real meaning of the feeding’. In verse 26 Jesus is saying, ‘You seek me not because you saw, but because you were filled with food. The discourse follows a night where His disciples endured a tremendous storm on the Sea of Galilee, and Jesus appeared walking on water, displaying that He is much more than a provisional king -he is also a storm king for life’s challenges.Īnd here in His discourse on the bread of life, Jesus is distinguishing between those who seek after the material things of the world, and those who seek spiritual things. They were looking for a king to fulfill fleshly desires rather than the spiritual desires of our hearts. But Jesus knew their hearts were not looking for the promised King. The multitudes tracked Jesus down and wanted to make Him king right then and there.
